Recommended by a friend, Castel Gandolfo is a hilltop village that overlooks Lago di Albano (Lake Albano to you and me) aka the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen, aka summer home to the pope. La Locanda del Pontefice, is a wonderfully chic Italian hotel/apartment complex. It totally caught me off guard, as we only booked to stay when our preferred hotel couldn’t accommodate us until the next day. Our room was just, lovely; Italian antique furniture, open log fire and stunning view of the lake – visual feast or what? We arrived around lunch and after over a week of intense travelling and exploring (translated; life threatening car journeys, nomadic hotel switching and blister swarmed feet), we decided to indulge in a little r&r – naturally, this means we spent the afternoon soaking up the sun, drinking wine and generally being mesmerised by THAT dreamy view. Sheer. Bliss.
